The highly anticipated rematch between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu in the 3-point contest will not take place at this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco. Despite weeks of discussions, the NBA ultimately decided to scrap the event, leaving fans disappointed.
In an interview with ESPN, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said, “We weren’t able to land on a plan we thought would raise the bar off of last year’s special moment. We all agreed not to proceed and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday’s new format.”
The announcement comes as a surprise, given that Stephen Curry defeated Ionescu 29-26 in last year’s highly praised event. With All-Star Weekend set to take place on Curry’s home court and Ionescu being a Bay Area native, a rematch seemed like a perfect fit. At one point, discussions even explored a 2-on-2 format featuring Curry’s former teammate Klay Thompson and WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. However, Clark declined the invitation to participate in the contest.
With the rematch now off the table, fans will have to wait and see if Curry and Ionescu find another stage to settle the score in the future.

As the news went viral, fans were quick to express their disappointment. Many saw the event as a unique and entertaining way to promote the WNBA while showcasing elite shooting talent from both leagues. One fan voiced their frustration, saying, “I don’t get it. This was fun. Great way to promote WNBA players.”
Whereas, another fan commented, “Dang, that’ll be missed. But, makes sense if it won’t hit like last year.” Furthermore, one wrote, “Disappointing, but excited for All-Star Sunday’s new format instead.”
However, one fan took a more frustrated stance and wrote, “Thank you. Enough of Steph doing shit for this fucking league, only to get treated worse than a 10-day contract player. F*ck this league and that bitchh Silver.” One fan simply demanded, “Make it happen!!”
