The 2025 NBA All-Star Game took an unexpected turn when LeBron James announced just 90 minutes before tip-off that he would not be participating. His absence, reportedly because of injury, sparked an immediate backlash from fans and analysts alike. While injuries are an unavoidable part of the game, the timing of LeBron’s decision drew criticism, with many questioning why he hadn’t provided an earlier heads-up.
After Jason Whitlock calling LeBron the “Cancer on the NBA”, one of the most vocal critics was former NBA champion and ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins, who didn’t hold back in sharing his thoughts on how LeBron handled the situation. In a recent ESPN interview, Perkins addressed LeBron’s absence, emphasizing that it wasn’t about him sitting out, but how he went about it.
“My grandpa always used to say, it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. Do I have a problem with LeBron James missing the All-Star Game at the age of 40 because of injury? Absolutely not! But it’s how he did it, right? And he knew that he wasn’t going to play when he was selected for the All-Star Game,” Perkins said. “How about giving people a heads-up? … It came off as him being selfish. It looked very selfish on his part.”
His comments echoed the frustrations of many fans who had tuned in, expecting to see the 40-year-old legend take the court. Furthermore, many fans took to social media to express their disappointment over LeBron James’ announcement.
Fans erupt over LeBron James’ last-minute exit
James’ decision to sit out just an hour before tip-off drew major backlash from fans on social media. Many criticized his timing, with one fan stating, “Him waiting until an hour before the game to tell everyone he’s not playing is why people call him Drama King…” Whereas, another fan questioned his presence at the game, saying, “Why show up and not play? Get out there for five minutes at least.”

One even blamed LeBron for the NBA’s declining viewership and wrote, “Hey NBA, this is why your viewership is down btw.” Another argued that he should have given his spot to another player, calling him “DRAMA KING.”

However, critics didn’t hold back, as one fan even labeled him a “Narcissist King.”
