The Dallas Mavericks recently traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, a blockbuster move that sent shockwaves through the basketball world. While some see it as one of the biggest blunders in NBA history, others are excited about the potential Doncic-LeBron James duo in Los Angeles. However, when the trade was first announced, outraged Mavericks fans staged protests against the franchise.
Amid the lingering backlash, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently addressed the situation, acknowledging the frustration surrounding the move. While empathetic toward the fan base, Silver also defended the Mavericks’ front office, emphasizing that they made the decision based on what they believed was best for the organization.
In an interview with ESPN, Silver expressed his understanding, stating, “In terms of anger with the fan base, I’m empathetic. I understand it. Dallas was in the Finals last year. I’ve already said this before: I like Luka very much..… It seems genuinely, truly authentic that he was stunned and disappointed. You could see it in his body language.”
The NBA Commissioner further added, “Having said all that, I also am sympathetic to the Mavericks organization. I’ve known Nico Harrison for a long time from his prior tenure at Nike, and I’ve gotten to be close to Patrick Dumont, our new governor in Dallas. I can say one thing for sure: Whether or not history will ultimately judge this as a smart trade, they did what they thought was in the best interest of their organization.”
With the trade now in the past, all eyes are on how Doncic adapts to his new team and what it means for both the Lakers and the Mavericks, as the season moves forward.
How Luka Doncic is performing with the Lakers?
In his Lakers debut, Luka Doncic recorded 14 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds while shooting 35.7% from the field and just 14.3% from beyond the arc. Though it wasn’t his most efficient performance, he showcased flashes of his elite playmaking and early chemistry with LeBron James.
In his second game, Doncic put up 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in just 23 minutes, showing signs of growing comfort within the Lakers’ system.
