Fans are just as important to the sport as the athletes themselves, and building meaningful connections with them is an essential responsibility for players. Paige Bueckers, celebrated for her incredible court skills, embraces this responsibility with heartfelt dedication.
In a recent post-game interview, the UConn Huskies star shared her thoughts on giving back to the community and the special bond she has built with a dedicated Huskies fan.
Paige Bueckers grows close to a UConn fan.
After the UConn Huskies’ dominant 79-44 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas this Sunday, star players took a moment to speak with the media. During the interview, one reporter asked Paige Bueckers about the team’s recent interaction with a fan in a wheelchair and the importance of giving back to the community. In response, the Huskies guard shared her thoughts on the significance of those connections and their impact on the team. She said:
It’s super important just to be able to give back. I know Michael. That’s who was in the wheelchair after the game. I’ve grown to be very close with him. Our team has grown to be very close with him. Relationships you build like that, it’s very important. I have little siblings, so I know what that’s like being a role model and being somebody that these kids look up to. So, to be able to build this relationship and have it so they’re not just watching us at games and going home and not getting to know us personally at all, it’s important.
Paige’s words highlight not only her commitment to her fans but also her understanding of the influence athletes can have on young lives as the fans look up to their icons just like young siblings look up to their elder siblings! It’s this genuine kindness that makes her not just a standout on the court, but a role model to many fans.
And as the Huskies continue their journey in the ongoing NCAA tournament, it’s clear that Paige Bueckers’ leadership extends well beyond personal connections, as the young star leads her team to back-to-back wins.
A rising star
The only loss the Huskies have recorded so far, in the 2024-25 NCAA season, is against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Except for their only loss, they have played ten matches so far in total, out of which they have won nine matches and it’s all thanks to their star player, Bueckers. The 6-foot-tall player is leading her team with a jaw-dropping average of 20 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
