In her first year in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark has given fans back-to-back reasons why many consider her a basketball prodigy. The 6-foot Indiana Fever guard has taken the league by storm with her dominating skills and deep-range shots, averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game. Clark was honored with Rookie of the Year, and now, adding to her growing list of accolades, the Fever star has been named TIME’s Athlete of the Year.
However, her achievement was quickly overshadowed by backlash after an interview with TIME went viral. In the interview, Clark downplayed her success by acknowledging it as a “White” privilege, which sparked a wave of criticism from fans around the globe.
Caitlin Clark faces backlash over her privileged remarks.
After securing this tremendous achievement, Clark, in a recent interview with TIME, said:
I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege. A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them……The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing.
Clark’s words quickly went viral and sparked a huge backlash from the fans, who were not happy with her statement. Expressing her disappointment, @MAGAgpsmith pointed out that there is no such thing as a white privilege, they said, “There is no such thing as white privilege @CaitlinClark22 I grew up in poverty. I know.”
Adding to this backlash, @carolmswain gave some advice to the young player and wrote, “Congratulations! Here’s some motherly advice. JUST PLAY BALl! 🏀 You don’t have to apologize for being white or successful.”
Whereas, another fan said, “Apologizing for the color of your skin is peak demoralization. Pathetic beyond words.”
Furthermore, one fan said, “Lost a fan. Lost my respect. You’re a great player not because of your skin color or “privilege”. Girl bye 👋”
However, another added, “And she then bowed to the race game… and lost all respect. Congrats 🙄So disappointing…”
Caitlin Clark’s remarks have sparked a wide range of reactions from fans. While her on-court accomplishments continue to make an impact in the basketball world, the conversation surrounding her recent comments persists.
